Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion (MDA) is a minimally invasive epidermal resurfacing process that can be used to treat uneven skin tone and texture, photoaging, striae, melasma, and scars, such as acne scars. It’s widely available, and it’s one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in the US.

Moreover, under the operation of a handheld vacuum machine, abrasive crystals are driven against the skin during the procedure. The crystals create moderate mechanical abrasion of the skin, eventually removing the epidermis’ stratum corneum layer.

A new epidermis with improved cosmesis forms as part of the wound healing process. The procedure is deemed safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types, with little adverse effects. MDA has been proven to improve skin permeability and the distribution of transdermal drugs dosed on a region of the skin treated with MDA, in addition to its cosmetic effects.

Microdermabrasion can be used to treat a variety of skin concerns including:

  • Dry skin
  • Enlarged pores
  • Sensitive skin
  • Oily skin
  • Acne-prone skin
  • Mature skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Scarring and pigmentation
